Dental Problems All Over US, Seeks to Reduce Costs

Tags: , , , , ,

Thousands of people flocked to New Havens on the 17th and the 18th of April for benefiting from free dental care. The second annual Connecticut Mission of Mercy which is a free dental clinic will be organized on both days starting at 5 am, at the New Haven Public Field House, 480 Sherman Parkway, in New Haven.

Thousands of people flocked to the place as dental costs are rising like hell, and the recession has added woes by emptying up people’s pockets. More and more such events are being organized in the US to relieve the people from their dental troubles, and there are some volunteers who are genuinely concerned about the whole thing. Estimates by the mission revealed that more than a million people lack dental access. More and more residents lose jobs too as the unemployment rate increases month after month. People are also losing access to dental insurance. Those dependent on Medicaid and state-administered assistance might also lose their dental coverage in an effort to close on with the massive budget gap.

“The economy is itself in cavities, not only the teeth,” Dental care has always taken a back set compared to general health, hence, most people prefer to cutback on it when times are not strong enough.”

Reports say that many of those who are insured for the time-being are trying to get the expensive treatments done before their insurance cover is taken away from them. Most companies are eliminating or reducing the dental benefits which they were offering before. Some dental plans have also reduced on the dental coverage limits from putting on one dental crown for every five years to only one in every 10 years. Some have even increased the co-pay on a root canal treatment from about 20% to 50%.

“Actually what happens is, that in a troublesome economy hovering, people who are without dental insurance are not going to the dentist or avoid going to him,” This is only driving people to have stinking gums, bad teeth, and a mouth full of cavities.”

We help people to save on about 60% of the total dental expenses with more than 100,000 dental providers who are affiliated to the plan. What’s more, if a person joins today, services are free for the first three months! Isn’t that incredible?”

This is real alternative to the high cost of health protection. This is not insurance. This is a discount health program. With the annual membership, you’ll receive our American Discount Dental Card by any dental plans. This card provides savings through physicians and medical providers, as well as dental, hearing, vision, and ancillary services. This program is ideal for those who:

· Those who cannot afford an insured plan;

· Those who are uninsurable or have critical policy exclusions;

· Those who are unemployed or working part-time;

· Those who have health insurance but have limited or no coverage for dental, prescription drugs, vision, alternative care, and long-term care.

Those who are healthy and rarely take advantage of insured benefits, but want access to reduced rates just in case.

Important Considerations and Solutions to Common Puppy Health Problems

Tags: , , , , , ,

Owning a puppy requires constant attention, and lots of TLC. Like us humans, they need to be taken care of or else they’ll suffer from mild to more serious health problems.

Taking your pup to your vet for regular check-ups is your best bet to avoiding serious puppy health problems. But it is also crucial for you to develop a keen eye for his usual predisposition – so that if and when something’s not right – you will be able to spot the tell-tale signs and take action accordingly.

It might sound like a hard job to have to keep an eye on your puppy all the time – but it is easier than you think. Once you’ve been by his side for a week or two, you will get to know and love him, and you will instinctively understand if his health is not the way it should be.

I have put together a checklist below, to help you spot some of the most common puppy health problems. You should take your puppy to the vet if:

His eyes are lifeless. Pus is oozing out of his eyes, it would signify a more serious eye problem that the vet needs to diagnose. His ears are dirty. They should be clean, because this might cause severe ear infection in the future. His nose is not moist. If it’s dry, your dog might have bacterial infection. If it’s too wet, your dog might be experiencing the early stages of flu. Beware of this one though, his nose might just be temporarily dry in which case nothing’s wrong. Always look at this one in context – is he eating as he used to, is he more miserable than usual, is he hotter than usual and so on… His coat is dull. This may not seem like much of a worry, but it may be a signal for insufficient diet. So you should speak to your vet to see if that’s the cause. If dryness is combined with gravely dirt or dandruff, your puppy may have flea problems, or skin problems – either way it’s best you let the vet decide. His mouth has cuts or is swollen. A swollen tooth is the usual cause, which can be really, really painful for any dog. But also – it’s likely he’s chewed on something and cut himself, or he may have been in a fight. Either way if the wound is bleeding you should take him to the vet to make sure the appropriate steps are taken so as not to cause any unnecessary infection – and of course to allow the wound to heal properly. He has low appetite – this is by far the one symptom that I’ve learned to take seriously. Dogs love food generally – so if you see he’s not eating as much, this is almost always a sign of a health problem in your puppy. But don’t panic – it may just be the heat too.

If you suspect the heat has nothing to do with it, and you pup has not eaten in the last 12 to 24 hours you must take him to your vet. He’ll decide what to do from there. Beware that if you leave it for too long after 24 hrs, you may cause serious damage to his digestive system and other internal organs through dehydration and malnutrition. Puppies are like babies – very fragile in the beginning.

He vomits regularly – dogs are not like cats in the respect that they throw up fur balls. So if your puppy vomits 2-3 times in a row, or regularly – like once a day, this may be a sign of a digestive health problem, or that something’s wrong with his food. Either way – best you take him to Mr. Vet… He coughs – a regular cough should alert you that somethings not right – again the best solution is to take him to the vet.

So how do you prevent health problems from even becoming a problem in the first place?

Here are a few easy to follow, basic tips on keeping your puppy’s health problem free:

Fleas – De-flea your puppy regularly. Wether you deside to use drops, injections or a collar is up to you, but make sure you keep up with the expiration dates.

Fleas hide a multitude of ailments for your puppy. They can cause severe skin problems, they can carry diseases, not to mention that they are very irritating for your pup, and can cause havok with your home if an infestation sets in.
Luckily keeping them under control is just about keeping up with the treatments. If you’re unsure of which treatment is best for your environment and your pup – consult your vet.

Ticks – Ticks are more dangerous than fleas, but are less common (depending on where you live). They are also very preventable with treatments like anti-tic drops, collars, and sprays. Apart from the treatments, you should also regularly check your puppy’s coat and skin for any bumps or lumps that are unusual. A dayly run of your fingers through his coat should enable you to spot anything unusual – check it as you find it to ensure that if it is a tic – you can take it out and treat the wound immediately.

Tics carry a lot of diseases – some of them can be lethal to your furry friend. Make sure you speak to your vet about the proper way to remove them, because ticks have a head that tends to stay behind in your puppy’s skin and can cause infection and inflammation.

You may find that in summer you see more of them than in winter. If you do – make sure to up the precautions you take. Always consult your vet before you do that to make sure the dosage is right for your puppy.

Worms – Worms are part and parcel of a dog’s life. Puppies in particular love to explore and muck around in durt. They also love to eat poo – nasty – but true. Your vet will advise you of the proper deworming schedule and treatment, when you take your puppy to him the first time around.

It sounds nasty, but like fleas, if you keep up wth the treatments, you most likely will never experience a problem. However, if worms are left untreated, they could cause severe discomfort to your dog and in extreme cases death.

Grooming & General Health – well, it should go without saying, but I have to mention this just to complete the checklist. Depending on your dog breed and its coat, you should be brushing your puppy at least once every 2-3 days (every day if he has a long coat). This will prevent his fur from becoming matted. It will stimulate the oils in his skin, resulting in a healthy shiny coat. It will also enable you to keep an eye on any other skin problems and flea or tic infestations.

Just like you wash your face in the morning, you should make sure his eyes are clean every day. Have some dog wipes handy for this.

Make sure you trim his nails regularly if the breed requires it. And generally make sure he’s properly fed, well exercised, and entertained daily. If at all unsure of how to take good care of your puppy’s health – your vet will be able to advise you extensively.

Overall you will have no problem avoiding most of the common puppy health problems, if you follow my checklist above. Remember to always look at symptoms in context of the bigger picture of your puppy’s health. Love him and treat him well, and he’ll respond with endless hours of joy and love. And if in doubt – your vet is always at hand to advise you.

Adults in Later Life With Mental Health Problems

Tags: , , , , ,

Most older people do not develop mental health problems, but a significant minority have dementia or experience problems such as depression.

Introduction

It is estimated that 18% of the general population in the UK are of pensionable age and that this figure will grow to 20% by 2025. As a society, we tend to assume that older people will develop mental health problems as a ‘normal’ aspect of ageing. Most older people do not develop mental health problems, although a significant minority does. For example:

about 25% of people over 85 have dementia.
between 10-15% of people over 65 have depression
between 4-23% of older adults seen by medical staff have an alcohol problem.

In addition to those older people who have an identifiable mental illness such as dementia, there are many who experience psychological or emotional distress associated with isolation, loneliness or loss. These problems are not recorded by the health or medical care system.

What problems affect people in later life?

Dementia

Dementia is a decline in mental ability which affects memory, thinking, problem solving, concentration, perception and behaviour. Some forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, are degenerative. That is, they get worse over time. Other forms of dementia, such as vascular dementia, may be non-degenerative. That is, they may not get worse over time.

People with dementia can become confused. Some people also become restless or display repetitive behaviour. They may also seem irritable, tearful or agitated. This can be very distressing for both the person with dementia and their family and friends. Some people with dementia also develop other problems such as depression, disturbed sleep, aggression, inappropriate sexual behaviour and incontinence, although the latter issues tend to be associated with more advanced dementia.

About one in 20 people over the age of 65 are affected by dementia and this figure rises to one in four people over the age of 85 (Audit Commission, 2000). People under the age of 65 can develop dementia but this is rare and is known as early onset or pre-senile dementia.

What causes dementia?

Dementia occurs as a result of the death of brain cells or damage in parts of the brain that deal with our thought processes and functioning. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. We do not know what causes Alzheimer’s disease but we do know that ageing is the biggest risk factor. The second most common type of dementia is vascular or multi-infarct dementia. This occurs as a result of a series of mini-strokes which constrict blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

Can dementia be prevented and is there a cure?

Most types of dementia cannot be cured but a number of psychological treatments and anti-dementia drugs can be very effective for those in the early stages of dementia. It is therefore very important to get a proper assessment of cognitive function from a medical practitioner as early as possible.

There are no guaranteed ways of preventing dementia, but you may find it helpful to follow a sensible diet and pursue a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical exercise and supplements like Gingko Biloba can help to ensure that there is always a good supply of blood to the brain. Please consult your GP before taking such medication. You can also help yourself by keeping your mind active, for example by doing crosswords or puzzles.

Depression

Depression describes a range of moods, from feeling a bit low to a severe problem, which interferes with everyday life and normal functioning. People with severe depression may experience a range of symptoms including low mood, loss of interest and pleasure as well as feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

Depression can affect anyone, of any culture, age or background but it affects proportionally more older people than any other age group. It is estimated that around 10-15% of elderly people in the community exhibit depressive symptoms, with this proportion rising to about 40% of care home residents. That said, you will not necessarily become depressed just because you are getting older.

What causes depression?

There are a number of risk factors that play a role in increasing older people’s vulnerability to depression including:

being widowed, divorced or retired
neurobiological changes associated with ageing
use of medication for other conditions
greater physical impairment and disease
loneliness and isolation
genetic susceptibility, which increases with age.

Can depression be prevented and is there a cure?

Depression in later life is a widely under recognised and under treated medical condition. Up until recently many health professionals – including GP’s – failed to offer the treatments and supports available to other age groups. Most forms of depression can be treated, using medication, talking treatments or other strategies.

It is can be difficult to diagnose depression in older people because it often occurs alongside other mental and physical illnesses, such as dementia, stroke, diabetes and cancer. In addition many older people do not seek help from their GP until they have a number of symptoms. As with dementia, it is important to seek help as early as possible.

Self-help strategies that can help reduce the risk of depression include:

taking regular exercise
planning for critical transitions such as retirement
seeking support from family and friends following the loss of a long-term partner
ensuring that you pursue a range of interests in later life.

Dementia and depression

The relationship between dementia and depression is complex. The symptoms of dementia and depression – including withdrawal from social activities and general apathy – are very similar. An elderly person with severe depression may occasionally be misdiagnosed as having dementia. A person with dementia may also become depressed.

Alcohol abuse

It is estimated that between 4%-23% of older adults seen by medical staff experience problems with alcohol. Figures also show that older men are currently between two and six times more likely than older women to be at risk of abusing alcohol.

Although alcohol abuse is a problem for people of all ages, it is more likely to go unrecognised among older people. Many older people use alcohol to deal with loss or loneliness. Approximately 10-30% of older people who abuse alcohol become depressed. They are also at greater risk of suicide.

Medication

Prescribed medications can cause mental health difficulties among older people. A 2001 Department of Health survey found that 79% of older people take prescribed medicines. Many older people take four or more medications at the same time. There are risks associated with taking multiple medications, including confusion.

More detailed information about medication and mental health problems can be found at the following sites:

Other mental health problems

There are a number of rarer mental health problems that affect older people, including delirium, anxiety and late-onset schizophrenia. The prevalence, nature, and course of these disorders are different in older people, as are the treatments that may be offered.

Capacity and older people with mental illness

People with dementia or severe mental illness may have difficulty in making and communicating decisions. Very few people are unable to be involved in making choices at all but some may have partial or fluctuating mental capacity and may need help with communication. Different approaches are also required to engage a person with dementia. They often need longer to make decisions, may need an advocate to speak on their behalf and their mental functioning may also vary by day, and time of day. Family members or carers are often useful sources of information but it is important to take account of the views of the person with dementia alongside those of their carer.

Help for carers

Caring for an older person with mental health problems can be very stressful, time consuming and emotionally and physically challenging. Caring for an older person with dementia is associated with higher levels of stress, with a third of carers suffering from depression.

Dental problems worldwide and its solutions

Tags: , , ,

What will you do if you have to shell out thousands of dollars every year on dental procedures, check ups, treatment, and consultation for yourself and your family? Yes you surely want to…right? Well there is never a case when people do not want to save money especially in these recession times. But first, you should know the overall scenario and the actual benefits a plan offers.

In October 2008, The University of South Carolina released a study related to the dental problems, ailments, and natural obstacles faced by American children. The study also covered all the aspects of the current level of dental treatment provided to these children. The results were astonishing as 25 percent of children in US were estimated to not receive dental care last year. Imagine, sucha plight in a developed country like USA. The study also showed that African-American and Hispanic children were the worst losers with regards to dental coverage which is an alarming statistic in itself.

“Children are the first sacrificial lambs to neglect due to the high cost of dental procedures. It is a tragedy that such a high number of children go without dental insurance or any other dental coverage.”

The reality is that there are standard types of dental plans available for consumers to choose from and save on dental health. But many people are unaware of such plans and do not know if they can save on their dental expenses or not. Many people make the mistake of thinking that getting their teeth fixed is easy. Many resort to the traditional medium of dental insurance to solve their problems. They think that one just has to go and see an insurance agent, offline or online, and buy dental insurance. But, just like any other type of insurance, dental insurance does not cover any pre-existing condition and that is really bad.

It has been seen repeatedly that dental insurance plans have limitations on the number of dental visits, radiographs (X-rays) and treatments that are covered, and other services like cosmetic dental procedures may be excluded.

The percentage of Americans with untreated cavities began rising this decade, reversing a half-century trend of improvement in dental health.

In 2006, a study revealed that Arkansas children have the worst teeth in the USA, closely followed by California. According to the new study, over 70% of third graders in California suffer or have suffered from tooth decay. Hispanics and children from poorer families have the highest levels of tooth decay.

The study carried out by The Dental Health Foundation and officials said the problem is very closely linked to low income and ethnicity. They said that even though tooth decay was lower among children from higher income families, even there it was much higher than expected.

Tooth decay has been cited by both the reports as the single most common chronic childhood malady. Hence it is important for various agencies to support the cause and stress on the need for children to have good dental coverage during this developmental period in their lives. Due to negligence many children had to suffer from several oral health infections. Lack of dental services and treatment can also lead children to lack of self-esteem, depression, and constant interference with their routine activities.

What are the Dangers and Problems of Rapid Weight Loss

Tags: , , , ,

People searching for weight loss programs and diets today seem to be searching more for rapid weight loss than permanent, healthy weight loss. Unfortunately, it is a fact that quick diet weight loss programs are seldom without their dangers, and their results usually range from erratic to nonexistent.

I would advise anyone seeking to lose weight to substitute the term ‘healthy weight loss program’ for ‘rapid weight loss program’. I hope, the following short discussion will explain my position to some extent.

You, like so many others in today’s society, are concerned about losing weight. Like so many others, you are looking for some sort of rapid weight loss program or plan. Rapid weight loss, also often referred to as quick weight loss or fast weight loss, involves, as its name implies, losing weight in a short period of time. Claims of such programs often cite fantastic results in anywhere from two to seven days.

In the United States, approximately two-thirds of the adult population is overweight or obese, and hundreds of thousands of these Americans are understandably interested in rapidly losing that unwanted weight. Many simply wish to lose weight before an important event, like an upcoming vacation or a wedding, while others are willing to accept the fact that permanent, healthy weight loss is a lifetime commitment.

While it is certainly simple to understand how you can want to lose weight as fast as possible, to tell the truth, you really need to proceed with caution. Although it is possible to lose weight, or at least a small part of it, in a relatively short period of time, you should realize that there are dangers and problems associated with doing so.

One of the many dangers of rapid weight loss is simply that which is inherent in some of the many measures that some people take. For instance, it is common to hear of individuals who have decided to fast, i.e. not to eat, while trying to achieve a rapid weight loss goal. Going without food, for even a short period of time, can be dangerous to your health. It deprives you of many nutrients necessary to health and will shortly cause your metabolism to slow down. At that point, initial weight loss will cease if it hasn’t already. At some future time, when you return to your normal consumption of calories, as most dieters do, your body will burn fewer of the calories you take in, and the excess will be stored as fat…more fat than would have been accumulated before the rapid weight loss program.

This results in a condition in which the person now weighs more than they did before the weight loss program or diet. They attempt to lose the weight by going back on the same diet or a similar program. This time, the weight loss is harder to accomplish, the basic metabolic rate may diminish more, and the person will eventually go off the diet and gain more weight! This is a cycle often referred to as yo-yo dieting, and, as you can see, it is a self-defeating situation.

During an extreme diet, one in which as little as two to three pounds a week are lost, the dieter can experience the loss of lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is the ‘incinerator’ which burns excess calories, and its loss can only make healthy weight loss even more difficult. Additionally, with less lean muscle, the person is less likely to feel like engaging in activity which could help burn fat.

While an actual rapid weight loss ‘danger’ is relatively small though quite genuine, the results, or lack of same, when combined with the loss of needed nutrients do not really seem worth the effort or risk. However, be aware that in the presence of some clinical conditions or while attempting to achieve rapid weight loss through extreme measures, the danger to health, and even life itself, can be quite real.

A WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION

A better alternative to simply ‘going on a diet’ is to cut back on the food that you do eat, particularly empty foods such as those sweetened with sugar, or heavily processed foods, or to just make sure that it is healthy foods which you are eating. Through limiting of your calories, you ought to be able to accomplish some sort of weight loss in the time that you were wanting to. However, it is very important that you do stick to a healthy eating and living plan.

EXERCISE AND HEALTHY EATING AND LIVING

Along with healthy eating and living practices, another important component of weight loss should always be exercise. Unfortunately, many individuals do not realize that it can take up to one week or more to notice any signs of results from exercise, and very obvious results will possibly take weeks or even months. However, in the long run, exercise, combined with sensible diet, proper hydration (plenty of water), and rest will result in a more permanent and more healthy weight loss experience.

Note, by the way, that those beginning an exercise program, particularly one which includes a strength training component…as it should…might actually notice a small weight gain at first. This is perfectly normal and is merely the result of adding lean muscle mass, which is healthier for the body, and this will help burn fat and calories. The scary part for the individual is that lean muscle mass often increases faster than they are losing fat, hence the temporary weight gain.

With all that having been said, the good news is that the more weight you need to lose, the sooner it is that you may actually start seeing results from a combined program of regular exercise and healthy eating and living.

While exercise should certainly be a major part of any plan for losing weight in a healthy and permanent manner, it is very important that you not overdo it. This is especially important if you haven’t previously had a regular exercise plan. Running on the treadmill for two hours, instead of twenty minutes, may burn fat faster, but, at the same time, it may also land you in the hospital. It is much better to begin at an extremely safe level and gradually work your way up to more difficult workouts than to start at some higher point just because you can and either give up because maintaining that pace is just too difficult, or because of some exercise injury.

DIET PLANS AND WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS

Another problem that should be considered when discussing rapid weight loss, is the taking of medications or weight loss products…particularly those sold off the supermarket shelf or through some magazine ad or an Internet website. The good news is that while some of these products do work a little, and some are even safe, you may not be able to tell what you are getting for your money or what it will do to your health in the long run. These products, such as the Alli diet pill, work best, if at all, when used in combination with a regular program of exercise and proper nutritional practices anyway. If, however, you are already doing that, it is fairly certain that you are losing a safe amount of weight at a healthy rate without having to pay for an additional helper which has no permanent health benefit and stops working as soon as you stop using it.

If you think you are interested in using a weight loss product, like a diet pill or a cleanse, to help you lose weight, it is important that you do the research first. This should, at the very least, involve reading reviews of the product to learn about its effectiveness, and discusing it with a qualified healthcare professional.

It is extremely important that you proceed with the utmost caution if trying to achieve rapid weight loss still appeals to you. Although unexpected events or appearances will occur without much notice, most individuals have at least a month’s worth of time before attending a large event such as a wedding or even going on a vacation to someplace where they wear bikinis all day. As soon as you become aware of your upcoming event, you are advised to start trying to lose weight then in a healthy and sensible manner, if you are interested in doing so.

An even better tactic might simply to be to adopt a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition combined with exercise. Then you won’t ever have to worry about such events, and you won’t have to ‘diet’ or try some other means of achieving rapid weight loss.

Weight Loss Diet Program Failure Overcoming Two Leading Problems

Tags: , , , , , , ,

A large number of people around the world are overweight. Most of them have been following different programs that would help them to lose weight but they were not successful. If you ask any person for the reasons of their failure, one way or the other they will give you the following two problems:

1. They could not follow the program.

2. They lost some weight but could not maintain it.

These two problems are the biggest ones that most people face but this does not mean that they are the only ones. Both of these problems are related to the human mind and not human body. Your exercise plan or diet has got nothing to do with the failure. The main cause of this failure is the mind state of a human being; he is expected to follow the program with consistency which for some people is not possible. Another reason for this failure is the conflict between a person’s unconscious and conscious state of mind. These two are the reasons due to which a person fails to lose his or her weight. If you are not prepared then nothing can help you get the required results.

The only solution to this problem is to change the entire life style of a person. This will help his sub-conscious mind to accept it and he will be able to follow the plan with more consistency. This shift will solve all the problems and the person will adapt to the new settings. Now this will be more of an adopted life style than a forced on. Now the person will follow the whole diet and exercise program without any trouble. There are numerous advance mind trainings that can help you achieve this state of mind, magically slim being one of them. With the required mind state in place a person will easily follow all the weight loss programs and will be able to maintain it for a long period of time.

With the mind state in place you will need to find yourself a good diet and exercise plan. You can only lose your weight if you are able to burn more calories than you take in. For this reason you need to have a good diet plan. You can ask a doctor to tell you about healthy foods with low calories or you can ask your friends who are already following a plan. You can also use the internet yourself and then evaluate the food items. This way you can eat what you want and you will know how much calories it contains. With your diet plan in place it’s time to get yourself a good exercise plan. You can go for some basic exercises or advanced exercise but this depends on your level of experience. You can buy the necessary equipment or join a gym for this reason. You also have another option! If you don’t want to follow exercises then you can go out for walking, cycling, swimming or running. They don’t require any specialized equipment so they are much easier to adopt.
