Generally, as the weather gets warmer we wear less clothes, so as summer approaches many people want to lose weight and get in shape for the beach. Below are 7 healthy eating tips to help you lose weight during the summer months.

Tip #1: Fresh Fruits are the #1 Snack

Depending on where you live, you likely see a significant improvement in the quality of the produce offered at your local grocery store during the summer months. Stock up on fruit once or twice a week. Take them to work, eat them as snacks, and eat them as dessert.

I don’t know about you, but for me a ripe mango taste just as good if not better than candy or a sugary dessert. And fruit will always have so much more vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water than any processed sugary dessert that comes in a box or bag.

Weight Loss Tip #2: Eat a Salad Once a Day

Just like fruit, the veggies tend to be fresher during the summer months. When you stock up on fruit, also stock up on veggies.

Preparing your own salad at lunch or with dinner is a great way to add tons of fiber and minerals to your diet without adding tons of calories. Starting dinner with a salad is a great way to curb overeating and support weight loss.

Weight Loss Tip #3: Careful with the Cold Drinks

During a hot summer day it’s so easy to reach for something cool and refreshing to drink, but you have to be careful that you’re not drinking too many extra calories. Sweetened Lemonade can pack over 200 calories for a 12 ounce serving.

A can of ice cold Coca Cola has about 140 calories per 12 ounce can. A cold 12 ounce beer has about 150 calories. And if you reach for a mixed drink like a cold Pina Colada while you’re sitting at the beach you’ll take in an additional 600 calories.

During the hot summer days try to stay hydrated with mostly water. Drinking mostly water is a great summer weight loss tip.

Tip #4: Careful with the Cold Desserts

Just like cool drinks, during the summer months it seems so easy to reach for ice cream after dinner to cool off. Ice cream tastes good, but it can really wreak havoc on your waistline. An occasional treat is okay, but try not to get the deluxe banana split with whipped cream, caramel, chocolate, fudge, and nuts. If you absolutely must have ice cream, consider sharing with someone else or buy 1 dessert for a group of 4. Less is more.

Tip #5: BBQ a Little Healthier

BBQ’s are a part of summer that so many people love, but a BBQ doesn’t have to be an excuse for you to pig out on all the bad stuff. Go light on the full fat beef, cheese, potato chips, coke, and beer.
Consider sharing a half of a hamburger or skip the cheese. Always seek out any fresh veggies, and limit yourself to one drink that is not water.

Tip #6: Eat Less When You Dine Out.

First, I will say that preparing your own food will help you to lose weight if you eat out often. But, when you do go out to eat during the summer months, try to eat a little less. You can cut back on restaurant calories by eliminating 1 or more courses.

Do you need the bread, appetizers, desserts, and drinks? Ask if you can have the sauce on the side, and try to order something tasty and a little healthy.

Tip #7: Aim to Eat 4-5 smaller meals throughout the day.

I know so many people rush off to work with no breakfast, and often skip or have a light lunch. Then at dinner it’s 1000 calories followed by another 500 calories of dessert. Your metabolism doesn’t like large meals. Try to eat 3-4 300-600 calorie meals and 1-2 100-200 calorie snacks throughout the day.

Hopefully, these simple eating tips will help you to lose weight. Of course, if you are really serious about losing weight then you will also incorporate exercise. Walking is a great place to start, and adding weight training will give you a significant boost. Get started and stick with it.

The entire process of storing, retaining and recalling information is known as memory. Many a times we have thought about how bad we fare on our mental capacity to remember things but we seldom take it seriously however recessing memory is a serious health disorder. Experts have designed so many ways to overcome the disorder or improve the condition. One of such tools is called mnemonics it enhances our capacity to remember things based on similarity. It is the neurons in our brain that send and receive signals. The stronger neurons connections are the better the memory is. If we practice ways to strengthen and protect them it can go a long way in ensuring a better memory, which generally degrades with age and mental disorders such as stress. So one should try reducing stress and getting involved in leisure activities. Try to experience new experiences and skills and move away from routine functions. Try new adventures and challenges and give body and mind new environments to function. Exercise regularly and do include brisk walk and cardiovascular exercises to enhance blood flow to brain to enhance its growth. Stimulate brain by involving oneself in brainstorming puzzles and quizzes. Read thru various magazines and books and stay update with newspapers. Try retaining as much information as possible and recall on a regular basis by referring to them in conversation. Avoid medication such as antidepressants and sleeping aids, as they tend to dull our mind. One should also try to kick unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking and getting involved in drugs/doping. Making sure to get adequate hours of sleep (minimum 8 hours per day) also ensures to help our brain stay active.

Memory can be long term or short term, few people boast of amazing memory they remember things as old as 20 years or more. Whereas some people might not even remember last week activities. It typically also depends on attention paid, it is researched that if one focuses for about 8 seconds or more the information is stored in the memory center of brain. Undistracted attention and avoiding multitasking also ensures information retention. Trying to involve as many senses to relate to information and recalling it by relating to it also helps in strengthening memory. Organizing information in a better way of referring back to when required for e.g. using address book or appointment diaries. Breaking down complex material into bits and pieces and interpreting them also helps in boosting memory.

Diseases such as diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases also affect memory. Stress also makes it difficult to concentrate and remember things. Eating healthy can help in restoring memory and generate healthy brain cells. It also helps to fight adverse effect of medication. Leafy green vegetables and legumes help to generate red blood cells that carry oxygen to the brain. Vitamin B, C and beta-carotene also acts as antioxidants and improve flow of oxygen thru body and brain. These naturally good substances are found in fruits and vegetables such as sweet potato, blue berries tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, green tea, citrus fruits, liver and nuts. How To Help Your Teenagers Stay Healthy: Mental Health

Many mental health problems begin during the teenage years, probably because it is such a difficult time. Teenagers deal with the daily stress of school, peer pressure, and relationships. They have the added stress of exams, learning to drive and getting their license, and impending college decisions. For some, there are also jobs and first monthly bills, like car insurance or cell phones. When combined with the day-to-day stress of home and family life, it can be overwhelming.


Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your teenagers stay mentally healthy.


Stay connected. It is easy for parents and teens to drift apart, sometimes living in almost different worlds. Make an effort to stay connected to your teen. If you know what is happening in their lives, you can spot warning signals that your teen is having problems.


Maintain communication. Keep communication lines open with your teen. While he or she may not always want to talk, they need to know they can talk to you. If you put your teen off, constantly interrupt, or belittle what he or she is saying, then your teen will be less likely to talk to you about the important issues in his or her life.


Try to understand. Although your teenage years may seem like a long time ago, you can remember what it was like to be that age. Take a moment to think about what it was like to be a teenager. Instead of belittling your teen’s issues, or pointing out how small their problems are compared to those of your adult life, try to understand what it is like to be a teenager facing the issues a teenager faces.


Seek outside help. Many parents are afraid to seek outside help, whether a counselor or a friend’s advice, because they think it will make them appear incompetent. Do not be more concerned with what the neighbors will think than you are with your child’s mental health. If your child is struggling with problems that you do not feel capable of helping them handle, find someone who can help you both.


Your teen’s mental health has bearing on his or her mental health as an adult. How they learn to cope and adapt sets the stage for their coping and adapting skills throughout life. Taking the time to help them stay mentally healthy now will continue to help them during those times when you are not there.


You can help ensure that the choices your teen makes are healthy ones. While helping your teen stay healthy requires a little work, the benefits of your efforts will last a lifetime.

Black Men and the Stigma of Seeking Mental Health Help

Neo soul artist, Angie Stone puts to lyrics what many Black women have been thinking about Black men for years when she said “you got mad issues, and you tend to refuse every opportunity to right your wrong”. Because the women in our lives, who know us so intimately and care for us so deeply, can see when we are hurting or responding out of pain. But Black men young and old are walking around with anger, hurt, and stress which is literally sucking the joy out our lives through high blood pressure, impotence, fatigue, alcoholism, and many other physical and emotional manifestations as the result of poor mental health. However, many of us stubbornly refuse to get the mental health help that is needed to be better men – husbands, fathers, boyfriends, or just plain ole emotionally whole.

No, it’s just not “Crazy Uncle Joe” in the backroom of your granny’s house who desperately needs mental health help, but it’s also those brothers out there who seem to have everything together. They are suffering alone, bottling up their emotions, or self medicating. And the ones who depend on them and love them dearly are suffering too.

But why, when mental health help is available?

When I sat down with Dr. Verdi Lethermon (Director of the Psychological Services Division for Houston Police Department and owner of Lethermon & Associates), she said that Black men are reluctant to get mental health help because “Black men have been historically misunderstood, misjudged, and oppressed. Black men have tried to walk a fine line of being assertive and understood without being aggressive. Black men tend not to show their weaknesses because of this. In therapy you have to be vulnerable and let your feelings out and address that.”

And letting feelings out is something that Black men were taught not to do at a very early age. We can all remember what was said to little girls when they fell down and scraped their knees, “aw baby, come here, it’s gon’ be alright.” However, the speech was much different when a little boy fell down and began to cry, “boy stop crying like a little girl, get yo’ a** up and walk it off”. And at those moments, little boys were trained to be grown men who can’t express emotions and are afraid of being vulnerable. But Dr. Lethermon believes that negative emotions have to be dealt with because if not “they eventually come out in an uncontrollable way and then we all pay the prices”.

We know that Black men have been used as scientific and medical guinea pigs from the slave ship to Tuskegee. And while this truth exists, it should not preclude us from getting the mental health help needed. Dr. Lethermon says that when Black men refuse to get mental health help “they tend to be re-victimized by the pain and stress in their lives and continue to victimize others”

So, now may be the right time for Black men to get the mental health help needed! But it takes other Black men and Black people in general to break the stigma about seeing a psychologist and to share mental health challenges. We should take advantage of our oral tradition of storytelling to tell the truth about our mental health. In the same way we ask for a good barber, we should be asking for a good therapist if we really need one.

But how do you know that you need mental health help? Dr. Lethermon says that some of the symptoms are when “you find yourself losing control in areas of your life that you typically have under control, or if a person finds their self slipping into a dark hole and removing self from people, stuff, and routines that you used to do.”

And if you ignore the symptoms, trouble is around the corner. “Anger rises to the surface, because anger is a safe feeling – instead of the real feeling of fear, inadequacy, emotional, stressed, overwhelmed, or powerless – and instead of looking at self that individual blames other people,” Leatherman says.

Fellas, it is not okay to bottle up your feelings or hold back the tears -your issues are real and the way that you feel about them are real also. Jesus wept, Job lamented, David sought counsel, and the O’Jays cried together with their women. So, instead of counseling with brown liquor, with another joint, another woman, or with ESPN – maybe it’s time to call a therapist to talk out these issues.

Ladies can assist in helping the Black men in their lives get the mental health help needed. Dr Leatherman says that mothers, sisters, girlfriends, and wives can “invite him to consider therapy or to a therapist out of your love for him to get him to take care of himself.” Women have great influence on how a man handles his mental health issues – they can be an advocate or a hindrance. Leatherman says that “sometimes women inadvertently stifle a man’s effort to express his feelings by the way women respond to him when he expresses his feelings. Sometimes women minimize his feelings or are overwhelmed and don’t want to hear them, and sometimes women invalidate them. And this can prevent future vulnerability and his willingness to get help, but sometimes they (women) are fighting back. I encourage women to take a look at themselves also – are they hurting or helping the man in their life express his feelings openly.”

So what happens when Black men get the mental health help needed? “It’s pretty amazing”, says Dr. Leatherman, “They feel better about themselves. And that feeling ripples to everybody else – particularly wives and children- they become role models and become the heads that they should be. Then the wives and children are more willing to submit and follow.”

Jill Scott may have said it best when she said “We Need You!” Black women need us, our children need us, and we need ourselves to be whole and emotionally stable. But that cannot happen if we continue to represent false manhood by being afraid to be vulnerable and get the mental health help that some of us so desperately need. Dr. Leatherman says this to Black men, “It takes a lot of courage to come to therapy, everybody won’t do it, but it is one of the best gifts that you can give yourself in life.” And the next generations are counting on you. Our race needs help, so help us God. Future generations are counting on Black men.

The educational system can sometimes be the best source of help and support for persons who suffer from mental illness. Many sufferers do not know what resources are available to them. They have often been given incorrect information while growing up. Because education continues to advance and change, it is important that people stay informed.


Individuals who have a mental illnesses should see a therapist. If they are educated, their chances of finding hope and selecting a therapist who is qualified increase. Mental health professionals continue to look for answers in order to treat their patients better. Just because a diagnosis has been made does not mean it is the correct diagnosis.


Diagnoses may conflict, although each relates to either a chemical or biological or psychological condition of the mind. In order to get help, individuals with mental illnesses must understand what they are facing, rather than simply trust others to tell them what is wrong. If these individuals look for information about mental health, they may even find their own answers and be able to inform the professionals that are helping them so they can develop better treatments.


Counseling frequently involves nothing more than a common-sense strategy combined with education. Mental health professionals are constantly learning, while at the same time, applying established principles in their treatment programs. In the combination of common sense and education, an answer may be found.


Sometimes, the answer may be lost because professionals try to treat all their patients as if they have the same diagnosis. However, everyone is unique, including those with mental illnesses. Two people with the same condition may react differently when the same treatment is applied to both of them. The solution to this problem is to reevaluate each patients situation and modify the treatment according to the individual patients needs.


It is also critical for patients to reconcile some issues themselves. If they are guilty about something, for example, they should recognize that is may be because of something they did or said that may or may not have been wrong. Patients sometimes have to be re-educated about what is right and wrong in a particular situation.


Once patients have gained this realization, professionals may find it is best to re-educate them with experiences rather than words. General Health Rules Help you Lose Weight

Each person is the dream of being thin, Happy and Healthy, but in today’s world of work and fast food, we know that is not possible. Most people are busy to eat, what to get it quick, easy and on the road. Forget about exercise! After his long day of work, children running around and you’re tired to do otherwise. No matter what happens in your life, you still have to think about eating better and working to achieve that body you’ve always wanted. So why not start with a couple of steps in the direction you can make in your everyday life.

Breakfast absolutely most important meal of the day. If you believe or not it’s true. Your body needs fuel to function during the day and the food is your fuel. Your body burns carbohydrates throughout the day to give food first thing in the morning is the best you can do. Also, drink a glass of water in the morning is good and it re-hydrate your body.

So here the great floor of fear …. carbohydrates! I believe that carbohydrates are very poorly understood, are not the enemy only has to learn a little more about them. Carbohydrates should be taken into why eating more defiantly will harm your body and you gain weight.

Simple carbohydrates are the type of damage, which you want to stay away from. Simple carbohydrates are basically anything that absorbs quickly into your body. For example. pop, pancakes, chips (all junk food), potatoes, white rice, white bread, pasta, etc … They give you a sugar high, (you have to quick burst of energy) and then crash (when you feel tired completely new). Basically everything is a processed simple carbohydrates, as well as most of the starches.

Complex carbohydrates, this is the best type of carbohydrates to eat. I do not recommend eating many of these either in a meeting, but it is the best way to go between the two. Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest therefore in your body, making you feel fuller longer. So if you feel more complete as it is less likely to snack on junk food in the middle. For example. whole wheat bread, brown rice, oats, nuts, grains, etc. .. Although not always apparent, as the most exciting choice of choosing is defiantly the best way to go.

-Proteins are the best thing to feed your body. Satisfy your hunger for protein and no added sugar in your body. Choosing the right protein is the key. Lean meats, chicken, tuna, almonds (only a handful at a time), cottage cheese, soy milk (for women), rice or almond milk (for men), eggs (no more than 5 per week with yokes ), etc … Protein helps build lean muscles strong as long as your eating the most appropriate. Bacon is not a good source of protein! You want to stay away from fatty meats.

Water is extremely important for your body. 2 / 3 of the body consists of water, it needs to function. Water is the fuel for your car, is something that is not free. 8 glasses of water a day!

Snacks between meals is not always a bad thing, provided that the right to choose their type. Fruits and vegetables are excellent, but if your quest for Weight Loss to get a little more protein. Grab a handful of walnuts, almonds are a great source of protein. Have a protein bar, not only these are a great source of proteins that suppress the appetite. Try to stay away from junk food!

Everyone knows that the night is the easiest time to snack and sometimes snack foods are fast food restaurants. Try to avoid eating at night, if you’re hungry drink a full glass of water that fills up your stomach. Sometimes we think we’re hungry, because they’re bored or just want to eat, so if water does not work and need to go to a protein snack. Note that when you first decide to change their habits is going to have some power too. Walk away from the kitchen, try to get your mind on something else. Mind over matter!

When most people think about mental health, they immediately think about depression, stress and anxiety. People will also think about how the causes of poor mental health, such as someone living in poor conditions, someone living in an abusive situation or someone who is suffering an addiction.
